1924-2023
Lester Herring passed recently in McMinnville, Oregon, age 98.
A celebration of life will be held February 18th at the Church of Christ in McMinnville, Oregon.
Lester, the first of three children born to Lester Lee and Minnie Maude (Carter) Herring in Fresno, CA, attended school in a one room school, taught by his mother. He graduated from Sunflower School in a class of one in 1938, graduated in 1942 from Avenal High School, and attended Pepperdine College, Los Angeles, graduating
with a B.A. in Business in 1949. Lester served in the Navy during World War II from 1943 to 1945 and was a
Photographer’s Mate with Air Crew Wings. During his Pepperdine years he met the love of his life, Evelyn
Coburn, and they were married in Pensacola, Florida, on July 1, 1944.
After college he worked as Office Manager at Productol Chemical Co. in Santa Fe Springs, CA, opened the
bicycle shop in Cloverdale, CA, and owned a Montgomery Ward Catalog Store also in Cloverdale. While living in Cloverdale, Lester was involved with the Cloverdale Historical Society and the Pacific Coast Air Museum in Santa Rosa, CA.
His special interests included photography, genealogy, history, travel, and house-boating. One of his favorite
vacations was to organize a large group and rent houseboats on Lake Powell. He also travelled to Europe,
Australia, New Zealand, and the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska.
Lester is survived by his four children, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and his sister. He was
predeceased by his wife of 69 1/2 years, Evelyn, and a brother and son-in-law.
