Ashley White

My name is Ashley White, formerly Ashley Lopus. I am a CUSD graduate, mother of two CUSD students and a long-time community volunteer and advocate for our town’s youth.

The success of all CUSD students and continuous investment in our community, remain my key priorities. Providing a school with exemplary educators/staff, access to needed tools and an encouraging learning environment, is what I believe to be most essential.

My financial planning and budgeting experience, as well as my community involvement, equips me with the edge needed to contribute to CUSD’s ability to provide what is essential for a successful learning environment. This is crucial for ALL students, staff and our community amid these financially complex times ahead.

Gabriela Mendoza-Torres

A teacher, parent and community member, Gabriela is the daughter of immigrant field workers and alumna of Cloverdale High School, a first-generation Masters degree recipient and bilingual science educator. She offers an approach centered in communication, inclusion and advocacy to create a safer, more successful school district.

Johannes Hoevertsz

Hello everyone! I’m Johannes J. Hoevertsz, and I am running to represent you on the Cloverdale Unified School District Board. I graduated from California State University, Fresno with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and currently serve as the Director of Transportation & Public Works for Sonoma County.

I have served on Government Boards, Councils and Committees for over 21 years and have experience in complex negotiations, community engagement, and fiscal management. I believe public education is an investment in our community, present and future. I believe in giving back to our community and in academic excellence. Education is a team effort, and it involves educators, parents, students, staff, community groups, members of educational organizations, state and local policymakers, and a team of effective leaders. My goal is to work with all stakeholders to provide Cloverdale Unified School Students the best academic education experience possible.

Brandon Axell

I am Brandon Axell, a current board member and running for the CUSD school board. I will continue to bring fresh ideas and accountability. I will work tirelessly to safeguard the classroom while maintaining a balanced budget. I will work with stakeholders, listen to and address concerns, and support a quality education while upholding educational standards.

My wife, Julie, and I moved to Cloverdale in 2002 and have four boys attending CHS and Washington. I am a Cal Poly graduate and General Manager of Beckstoffer Vineyards. My daily job requires communication, yearly and monthly budgeting, human resources, federal and state guidelines, facilities planning, and management.

I have served on the CUSD bond oversight and master plan committees. I have spent time campaigning for the school improvement bond and volunteering to assist at school sporting events. Over the last 15 years, I have volunteered thousands of hours for Cloverdale Soccer, Little League, and Eagle Pride Boosters supporting our youth.

I can make a difference as a board member. I promise to voice my opinions, listen to others, and work collaboratively towards resolutions in all school children’s best interests. I bring enthusiasm, proven experience, and long-term commitment to the operation of our schools.

Preston Addison

My dedication to education in Cloverdale spans over two decades. With ten years of classroom
experience, most at Cloverdale High, I understand the need for innovative science and math
programs and the importance of creative, realistic, and adaptive responses to the changing needs of our
community.While committed to academics, CUSD needs to expand our vocational programs. During
my tenure on the Board, Maker and Construction programs were implemented. As the owner of a
construction business, I recognize the growing need we face for talented workers in the agriculture and building industries. Based on community and staff input, I have actively promoted several new
construction projects including the first permanent classrooms constructed here in decades, an all-weather track and field, and a new gym. Having grown up in a rural town, I understand the unique needs of small schools and the importance of community. If I am re-elected, I will continue to strengthen the connections between our city, service groups, businesses, and schools. My qualifications for this position include teaching and school board experience, and local business ownership. My children have attended all three Cloverdale schools, and I remain committed to contributing to the educational success of our students.

Originally called Musalacon High School, Johanna Echols-Hansen Continuation High School – JEH for short – is located at 322 N. Washington St. It was renamed about 1981 in memory of the beloved former teacher.

Born Dec. 14, 1942 in Los Angeles, Johanna graduated from Cal State Chico with a BA in English and an MA in Psychology.

In 1972, she was chosen from a field of 63 applicants to become the only teacher at Musalacon, while also serving as principal of the Cloverdale Adult School where she taught a course in basic English skills.

She married Mendocino County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Hansen on June 29,1979 and settled in Ukiah. They had only been married 14 months when she was killed in a head on collision just north of Hopland on Aug. 28, 1980.

The 2020-21 school year looks different than every school year before it, but school is definitely in session. CARE, Cloverdale’s education foundation, is an important partner in the success of our schools. Year after year, it is up to us – parents and community members – to fill the gap created by inadequate state funding. As teachers, parents and students are being asked to succeed at a completely new education model – Distance Learning – Cloverdale’s schools need our community support now more than ever.

CARE is dedicated to enriching the educational experience of all students equitably in the Cloverdale Unified School District, and we are committed to helping schools and families navigate this school year. Of the 1,400 students in the District, 52% are eligible for free meals, meaning a family of 4 earns less than $33,000 per year. These young people will become our future employees and customers; they are working hard to become productive citizens and deserve our support.

The Cloverdale community is known for its generosity and that is what makes this town such a special place. Looking to the future, we know that adequate funding will be extremely
important to enhance virtual learning opportunities, promote classroom innovation, support student social and emotional well-being, and build new programs for a secure future for Cloverdale schools and students.
