ALIVE INSIDE is a joyous cinematic exploration of music’s capacity to reawaken our souls and uncover the deepest parts of our humanity. Filmmaker Michael Rossato-Bennett chronicles the astonishing experiences of individuals around the country who have been revitalized through the simple experience of listening to music. His camera reveals the uniquely human connection we find in music and how its healing power can triumph where prescription medication falls short.

This stirring documentary follows numerous visionaries in healthcare including social worker Dan Cohen, founder of the nonprofit organization Music & Memory, as he fights against a broken healthcare system to demonstrate music’s ability to combat memory loss and restore a deep sense of self to those suffering from it. Rossato-Bennett visits family members who have witnessed the miraculous effects of personalized music on their loved ones, and offers illuminating interviews with experts including renowned neurologist and best-selling author Oliver Sacks (Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain), healthcare visionaries Dr. Bill Thomas, Dr. Al Powers, Naomi Fiel, and musician Bobby McFerrin (“Don’t Worry, Be Happy”).

An uplifting cinematic exploration of music and the mind, ALIVE INSIDE’s inspirational and emotional story left audiences humming, clapping and cheering at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award.

Owner/Administrator, Kristi Shehan, found a need for a quality elderly facility in Cloverdale, where she grew up. When her own grandparents, long-time residents of Cloverdale, moved into an Assisted Living facility out of the area, she was disappointed by the type of care they were receiving, as well as the cost of the care.

Having worked in the medical field, she converted the home in which she grew up into a care facility to accommodate six residents. By catering to a small group, Kristi maintains a high standard of quality care and still keep it family oriented. The facility has been licensed since 2009 and has helped a variety of residents through-out the years.

“We are licensed for bedridden, dementia, hospice, and total care. I love our community and my vision grows! To connect our residents to our local community through various programming, combat loneliness, support our local community, and provide a holistic approach to care is my passion.”

The Villas Assisted Living has partnerships with a local preschool, exchanging interactive crafts between the children and seniors. This unique generational integration truly brings joy to the residents in care. Kristi has been working to implement a wonderful dietary program, featuring seasonal fruits and vegetables from local vendors as well. These are just a few highlights to the vision for The Villas as they continue to grow more opportunities to connect in ways that are genuinely rewarding.

The Redwood Credit Union Community Fire Relief Fund for 2020 will be open at least through October. Financial donations are now being accepted into the fund to assist fire survivors and aid relief efforts. One hundred percent of the tax-deductible donations will be distributed directly to fire survivors, beginning with those who lost their primary residence in Sonoma, Marin, Napa, and Lake Counties and through nonprofit organizations.
There will be no overhead costs from RCUCF. As additional funds become available, RCUCF will provide support to those who experienced increased expenses due to the recent evacuations.

Donations can be made online at:
rcucommunityfund.org or by mail, P.O. Box 6104, Santa Rosa, CA 95406 (Attn: 2020 Fire Relief Fund). The Redwood Credit Union Community Fund is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit fund created by Redwood Credit Union to support our commitment to wellness in our communities.

“At Redwood Credit Union, every day we passionately serve our members, employees and communities and in times of crisis, that means stepping up even more,” said Brett Martinez, RCU President & CEO. “Year after year, we’re faced with a new wildfire season and it’s taking a toll on our communities’ emotional and financial wellness. Establishing an immediate relief fund for survivors who lost their homes due to the recent fires simply feels like the right thing to do.”

What is Health Action?
Let’s start with what we are not. We are not a political organization and we are not a program funded by the County of Sonoma. Health Action is a framework for community health improvement and health equity that mobilizes community partnerships and resources to focus on key factors that influence health, including health system effectiveness, the built environment, and social determinants such as education and income. Health Action is one response to the 2014 document The Portrait of Sonoma County. The Portrait of Sonoma County is an in-depth look at how the residents of Sonoma County are faring in three fundamental areas: life expectancy, education, and income. In this document, Cloverdale was identified as one region in the County where social services and supports were lacking; thus, contributing to Cloverdalians leading shorter lives with less education and lower income, in comparison to their Sonoma County neighbors.

What does Health Action Cloverdale (HAC) do?
HAC has two roles in the community. First, we have the capacity to pilot strategies and interventions that work to address healthier outcomes in our three priority areas for Cloverdale residents: a long and healthy life, educational attainment, and a comfortable standard of living. To do this, we mobilize current power structures and relationships, bridging the gap between public, private, and nonprofit sectors for collective impact. For example, HAC received $32,000 in grants, not including support from the City of Cloverdale, which we used to aid groups such as the “Tuesday morning St. Peter’s Church” volunteers, serving folks in Cloverdale who are homeless or at-risk.

Secondly, we resource community members to connect and support Cloverdale from within. Local volunteers, like Shirley Davis, saw a need to bring a program she was already working in, called Seasons of Sharing, to Cloverdale. HAC purchased a laptop and hot spot to equip Shirley to sit side by side and help members of the community fill out applications for rental/financial assistance, when prior to this the closest location to receive that help was in Healdsburg.

HAC is in an exciting time of transformation. The pandemic prevented our monthly physical meetings. In September we kicked off our reignition of Health Action with a Zoom presentation about a disaster emergency preparedness program called LISTOS. (For more information, please use their website https://nc707.org/) We are continuing our work to promote systemic policy change using the “Self-Healing Communities” model as researched and endorsed by Laura Porter of ACE Interface and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The SHC model proves that if our community will look at some of our most dire problems – food scarcity, poor mental health, homelessness, through a trauma informed lens; we will be able to solve problems that span generations. We invite you to join us for a learning opportunity below:

Oct. 15 Thursday 10-11:30 am ACEs and Self-Healing Communities for Policy and Decision Makers https://www.eventbrite.com/e/aces-and-self-healing-communities-for-policy-and-decision-makers-tickets-122179124049
Health Action Cloverdale needs your participation and opinions to continue the mission.

The next meeting will be October 20th at 4pm via Zoom. For more information or any other questions, please reach out to Amanda Farrar through the Cloverdale Senior Multipurpose Center. 707-894-4826 or amanda@amandafarrarlcsw.com (Please note if technology is a barrier to participation, the Senior Center will be able to provide socially distant viewing of the meeting at their location. Contact the Center for details.)
