WEEKLY CONCERTS TO RUN JULY 2 – OCTOBER 1, 2021
The Cloverdale Arts Alliance, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing cultural arts to northern Sonoma County has announced 2021 dates for its popular Friday Night Live at the Plaza free concert series. This 18th season of weekly outdoor concerts in Cloverdale’s downtown plaza is scheduled to run for 14 successive Fridays, July 2 to October 1. Due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns CAA has built in a cushion by slating the series to begin about a month later than usual.

“Friday Night Live promotes the best of Cloverdale and small-town America” says Cloverdale Arts Alliance Executive Director, Mark Tharrington. “We believe a vibrant local arts scene raises the quality of life for our entire community and are committed to doing everything we can to get the FNL series up and running again this summer.”

Tharrington added, “We are moving forward, booking bands, and getting ready, with the understanding that planning live, outdoor music events has potential obstacles and unknowns. We are optimistically anticipating the FNL venue in downtown Cloverdale will lend itself to compliance with pandemic-related restrictions, and CAA will be able to procure necessary permits.”

It is important to note that funding for Friday Night Live at the Plaza is generated by generous local individuals, businesses, winery sponsors, and also event concession sales. Tharrington said “We at Cloverdale Arts Alliance truly appreciate the continued community support and enthusiasm for FNL, which is our signature program.” He added, “We also appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as we do our best to navigate this unprecedented situation.”

Cloverdale Arts Alliance also provides the community with arts related programs including a cooperative Art Gallery located 204 N. Cloverdale Blvd. From within the Gallery CAA offers a myriad of music events such as THE Jazz Club, Americana Night, Blues Night, Acoustic Music Workshop, and Beatles Study Group. Other CAA programs include Art Classes for children and adults, Discovering Art workshops, and Wine Appreciation Classes.

Sara Hagen is still in shock that she has her own eyeglass store, I.SEE. Optical in Cloverdale. It was a long time thought and dream in the back of her head, but she never really thought it would be any more than just a thought. But during the initial COVID shut down when life was totally upside down for all of us, Sara needed to think about her future and what she could do to give herself more security.

Sara’s optical career started in San Diego during the last uneasy time in our history, the 2008 recession. Her previous career came to an abrupt end when the company she worked for laid off half the company on one Friday afternoon. Her landlord at the time was looking for someone to hire as a receptionist at her Optometry practice, Sara didn’t know the slightest about eyewear fashion, eye health or the medical field – she had to learn from the ground up. She worked for two amazing doctors, Caroline Cauchi, OD & Jamie Peters, OD of Vision Solutions in San Diego for 8 years. They both took the time to teach Sara everything she could possibly need to know about eye health, optics and eyewear fashions. Most importantly they taught her that educating herself is the most important part of optical. She is always reading articles, taking additional classes and doing online research to keep up on the latest technology and fashions.

Sara brought that work ethic with her to Sonoma County almost 5 years ago and has continued her optical career with the same work ethic, to give her best to each and every client she encounters. Sara is proud to bring high quality, handmade, sustainably made, fun and functional eyewear to Cloverdale. As a huge animal lover, she spent five years fostering cats when she lived in San Diego. She has both dogs and cats at home where she now lives with her “fantastic supportive partner” David. In her spare time, she enjoys wine tasting, hiking and kayaking.

Doris Jean Julius was a strong, courageous, caring and faithful mother. She passed away suddenly on March 27th 2021 in Cloverdale, California at the age of 90.

Doris was born to Otto and Eva Beck in Anaconda Montana on Feb 13th 1931. She graduated from Anaconda High School in June of 1949. In 1965 she moved with her family to California. Doris began her career as a maid in a convalescent hospital and through hard work, dedication and talent rose to be the head of the purchasing department at Ames Research Center in Mountain View California, a division of NASA. In 1986 she received the distinguished service award from NASA because of her contributions to the Apollo missions, the Space shuttle program, and the development of vertical take-off and landing aircraft.

Doris retired from NASA in 1988 and moved to Cloverdale California with her 2nd husband, Bob Julius, who in 2012 proceeded her in death.

She is survived by her four children, Lawrence (Melinda) Grimes, James Grimes, Melonie (Al) Delsid, and Daniel (Carol) Grimes as well as 9 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Doris had a strong Christian faith which carried her through the trials of life and informed her loving and caring motherhood. Doris had a note in her bible written in the margins of Samuel 1 saying “Mothers can be priests. Hannah knew the words of the Lord she was to give to her children. If a mother has faith, she can teach hope”. Doris’ proudest accomplishment was being a woman who not only taught, but exemplified, hope, love, and graciousness to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her family will miss her guidance and love.

“If we live, we live to the Lord and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s” (Romans 14:8). No matter how much we miss her, Doris Julius was, and always will be, the Lord’s.

The family would like to thank the staff at The Villas Assisted Living in Cloverdale for the compassionate care they provided to Doris in her final years. A memorial service will be held May 25th, 2021 at 2:00pm at Fred Young Mortuary in Cloverdale.

Donations in her name can be made to your favorite charity.
