It’s that time of year again, and the City of Cloverdale wants you to be prepared for emergencies that have the potential to impact our community. Resilient Cloverdale, a group of Cloverdale residents, businesses, and civic organizations, has developed for you CloveReady – how to be prepared in case of emergency. There are four easy steps you can learn to ensure that every resident understands the actions they can take before, during, and after an emergency to protect the health and well-being of their household and immediate neighbors.

1. Know Your Zone
2. Get Alerted
3. Pack a Little Bag
4. Have a Plan to Reunite

Visit our website https://cloveready.org/ to learn more about the initiative and ways you can get involved. Let’s walk through the four steps below.

Know your zone: The City of Cloverdale has established standardized evacuation zones for the incorporated area. The city encourages its residents to be familiar with their zone in case of an evacuation. The city map containing each boundary and zone can be found on the City of Cloverdale’s website. Learn your zone for home and work and be ready to go when an evacuation order or warning for your area is issued. To learn more about evacuation zones, visit: https://www.cloverdale.net/457/Emergency-Operation-Plan-and-Evacuation-
https://socoemergency.org/get-ready/evacuation-map/

Plan: When it’s time to evacuate and action is required, the City encourages residents to have a plan in place. Planning will give you the confidence to act and provide you with the necessary tools to stay safe. Below are some tips that you can use to help build your plan:

• Remember, first responders will be overloaded in a disaster; help yourself by planning in advance.
• People and pets are your priority.
• If you need help to evacuate, quickly reach out, in advance, to neighbors, family, or friends and discuss how they can assist you, what you will need, and a backup plan in case the immediate help is not able
to assist.
• Be sure to have an extra supply of life-saving medications and copies of prescriptions.
• Complete a Personal Emergency Plan and have it ready to go.

For more information on the Personal Emergency Plan, visit:https://socoemergency.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Emergency-Plan-Trifold-v6-English.pdf

https://s43263.pcdn.co/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Emergency-Plan-Trifold-v6-Spanish.pdf

Alerts: The City of Cloverdale has experienced disasters over the past several years, including floods, power shutoffs, a pandemic, and wildfires that have threatened the incorporated population. The City’s alert and warning system is vital in early alert notifications, and residents are encouraged to sign up to receive life-saving alerts. Below are the links to sign-up and receive critical information from different warning systems within Sonoma County.

Nixle – Receive email and text messages from local fire and law enforcement agencies that include public safety messages and emergency information. Text your zip code to 888777 to opt-in or sign up online to receive email or text messages with alerts and advisories.

SoCoAlert – Upon signing up for SoCoAlert, select to receive alerts through landline calls, cell phone text messages, or pre-recorded verbal messages and email. The system also works with telephone devices for the deaf.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio – This alert system is available at a relatively low cost. When properly programmed, the National

Weather Service can remotely turn on these radios and send basic alerts, including for wildfires. The message may be accompanied by a warning tone, depending on the model of radio you purchase.

Sonoma County residents may tune their NOAA radio to:

County of Sonoma Frequency 162.475
Northwest Sonoma County Frequency 162.550
Southwest Sonoma County Frequency 162.475

Build a Go Kit: Everyone in your family should have their own Go Bag that contains a minimum of 72 hours’ worth of essential supplies. These kits are collections of supplies needed when an earthquake strikes, or an emergency evacuation is ordered. Personalize kits and keep them where they can easily be reached—at home, in the car, at work, or at school. This is particularly important when a quick getaway may be needed during fire season. A backpack or other small bag is best for these kits to be easily carried in an evacuation.

• Personal Preparedness Go Bags should contain a minimum of 72 hours worth of essential supplies:

• Medications/List of Medications
• Pet Food/List of Pet Medications
• Cell Phone Charger Cord
• Extra Set of Keys to cars/storage units/RV’s
• Flashlights w/Batteries
• Sanitizer/hand wipes, N95 mask
• Original Documents (Passports, Birth Certificates etc.)
• Clothes

Also: Keep your phones and laptops and tablets fully charged.

• Home Preparedness Kits should contain a minimum of 7 days’ worth of emergency supplies.
• Vehicle Preparedness Kits should contain a minimum of 24 hours’ worth of emergency supplies.

For more information on Personal Preparedness Go Bag: https://socoemergency.org/get-ready/build-a-kit/personal-go-bags/

Have a Plan to Reunite: Because disaster can happen at any time, have your plan in place to reunite with your family members before there is an emergency. Talk to your family members about locations within and outside of Cloverdale to reunite if separated. Remember that local cell service and phone lines will most likely be disrupted in a disaster, so have a family member or friend outside of the County that will be your point of contact. For more information and a short worksheet, you can complete, check out https://cloveready.org/

https://cloveready.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/WORKSHEETForCloveReady_2.pdf

Coming This Summer: What’s the best thing we can do to be prepared for emergency? Know our neighbors. Think about it. Everyone wants to live in a safe, connected, and healthy community. The challenge is that everyone is so busy with their day-to-day routine, it’s hard to find time to meet and get to know each other.

Resilient Cloverdale wants to join you in having a block party. Block parties are a tried and true way to get people out in the street together for a few hours of fun, food, and neighboring. Connected communities are safer communities. Hosting a block party is not only a lot of fun, it’s also the easiest/fastest way to get the whole block together to break bread and get to know each other. Also, hosting a block party can also prepare your community to work together during times of stress to protect vulnerable residents on the block.

If you’re interested in hosting a block party with a few neighbors on your street and desire to incorporate emergency preparedness resources into your event, please reach out to us resilient@cloverdalechamber.com We are here for you to be CloveReady!

June is the start of the fresh produce season. On these warmer summer days, I enjoy grilled meat salads. The lettuce is a canvas for whatever you like, so have fun with it. You can substitute beef or omit the meat and the tequila is optional.

Ingredients

4 boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts

Tequila Marinade

1/2 cup lime juice (2 limes)

1/3 cup Tequila and a little more for sipping

3 tablespoons honey

1 teaspoon garlic, minced or crushed

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

Salad

4 cups Romaine lettuce leaves, chopped (or Cos lettuce)

1 cup grape tomatoes, halved

1 yellow pepper, deseeded and sliced

4 mini tortilla wraps

Avocado Dressing

1 ripe avocado, peeled and seed removed

1/2 cup plain yogurt or sour cream

1/4 reserved Tequila Marinade (see instructions below)

salt to taste

Step 1 In a large, shallow bowl, whisk marinade ingredients together to combine. Pour out 1/4 cup the marinade into a jug or cup, and refrigerate to use later in the avocado crema / dressing.

Step 2 Add the chicken fillets to the marinade in the bowl, and marinade for two hours if time allows (or overnight).

Step 3 Heat about one teaspoon of oil in a grill pan or skillet over medium-high heat and grill chicken fillets on each side until golden, crispy and cooked through (grill in batches to prevent excess water being released.) Once chicken is cooked, set aside and allow to rest.

a. Wipe pan over with paper towel; drizzle with another teaspoon of oil and fry pepper strips until cooked to your liking.
b. While chicken and peppers are cooking, combine the avocado, yogurt (or sour cream), reserved tequila marinade, and salt to taste in a blender, and blend until smooth. Add a couple tablespoons of water or milk to make it thinner in consistency if needed.
c. Optional: Warm tortillas on another pan over low heat until soft and warmed through. Transfer to warmed plates and cut into strips.
d. Slice chicken and prepare salad with leaves, peppers,
tomatoes and chicken. Drizzle with the avocado dressing and serve with lime wedges and taco strips.

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Joe Hawley of Cloverdale, California, who died peacefully on April 19th, 2023, just a few days after his 85th birthday. He was surrounded by his family and loved ones, and knew he was loved by students and colleagues far and wide. His great skill as a teacher, his endless artistic creativity, and his playful spirit will be forever missed.

Joe Hawley was a shining star in the ceramics world from a very young age, and is considered a pioneer in the early California Glass Arts movement. He became a tenured professor of ceramics at San Jose City College at just 21 years old, while completing his MFA in Glass Sculpture at San Jose State University. Shortly after, he moved on to become a professor at San Francisco State University, where he taught art for nearly three decades.

Teaching ceramics and glass at SFSU, and through his unique and indomitable creative spirit, he influenced countless creative minds over the years. His “Events” of the 1960’s, in collaboration with artist Mel Henderson, are the stuff of legend, notably his Oil and Yellow Cab events, which were featured in the BAM/PFA show State of Mind: New California Art Circa 1970. Joe founded the Hot Glass Department at SFSU, one of the first university hot glass shops in the country. He also taught regularly at the University of Hawaii, where—besides having a very good time—he founded Raku Ho’olaule’a, an annual beach-fired ceramics event which has been going strong for over 45 years.

Besides teaching and his extensive involvement in many of the creative “Events” in the 60’s, Joe Hawley spent years collaborating with industrial ceramics companies such as Gladding McBean and Mission Clay Products, where he created many of the large-scale ceramic pipe sculptures that he is known for. His extensive travels around the world also became a catalyst for much of his work, such as “Song of India,” a series of hanging and stacked pieces that were created after a sabbatical to the glass bead factories in India.

Joe retired from SFSU in 1995, moving into the old Alder Glen District County School, a turn of the century one room schoolhouse located just outside the community of Cloverdale, which he turned into his studio and art gallery. From there— for nearly 30 years—he continued his relentless exploration of art and sculpture through ceramics, glass, and mixed media, including metal, polyurethane foam, plastic toys, found objects, bronze, and concrete. His on-site creative projects include a 40′ concrete art wall called “The Edge” and, famously, a woodpecker-riddled wall of the schoolhouse, which he gallery framed and embellished with colored glass. He called this his “Collaboration with Woodpeckers.” Though Joe is now gone, the woodpeckers continue on with this work.

Joe Hawley loved the community of Cloverdale deeply, and was very proud of the little town he lived in. He supported and participated in the Cloverdale Alliance and Cloverdale Sculpture Trail over many years. He also loved beer and live music and up until very recently could be found enjoying the lively outdoor events of the area, especially Friday Night Live and Tuesday nights in the Healdsburg Plaza.

Joe was the last of his generation, predeceased by his sisters Hazel and Vivian and his brother Warren. He is survived by his loving daughter Jorin and her partner Hannes, his long-time girlfriend Wendy, and his devoted caregiver Robin. He had a loving family, a huge group of friends, and a giant student fan base, so his loss is truly and deeply felt.

We will all be dutifully looking after the woodpeckers for him.

Interviews of Joe speaking of his life and career can be found at https://cloverdalesculpturetrail.org/sculpture-day/

To share memories, please visit his memorial website: https://everloved.com/life-of/joseph-hawley/

Joe’s work will be featured in the upcoming Lost in Cloverdale art exhibition opening on July 1st, 2023 at 14feet., 229 N. Cloverdale Blvd.

That’s what is so great about living in a small town – I see people I know while I’m out doing
ordinary things. So, this summer whether you’re at Friday Night Live or watching the 4th of July Parade or grabbing a burger at Pick’s, be sure to smile and wave and spread some of that small town love around because that’s what makes our Cloverdale community so special.

I’ll see you around town!
