Marlys Southard passed away January 10, 2026 at the age of 94. She was born in North Dakota to a farming family who moved to Washington for economic reasons during the Depression. They came to Cloverdale in the late 1940s when the Coastal Plywood mill opened.

Marlys graduated from Cloverdale High School where she met the love of her life, R. B. Southard, whom she married in 1952. Together they raised four children in Cloverdale where R. B. ran his auto-repair and tire business while Marlys worked in the lumber industry. In 1976 they moved to rural property near Yorkville where they spent their retirement.

Marlys enjoyed music and played violin and piano from an early age. She shared with her husband a love of gardening, dancing (every week), and traveling across the country in their classic cars. She prepared many champagne brunches for high school reunions and to raise money for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Among family and friends she was known for her pies and homemade ice cream.

R. B. died in 2024 and two of their children, Diane and Dave, predeceased them both. Marlys’ love and presence will be missed by her remaining children, Jan and Paul Southard, daughters-in-law Melanee and Juli Southard, grandchildren Jake, Ryan, Brandon, Brett and Angela and eight great-grandchildren. A private remembrance will be held at the family ranch. The family suggests donations in Marlys’ memory be made to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (ovarian.org).

Rainbows have different meanings and symbolism to different people and cultures.

Technically, rainbows are optical illusions of light caused by sunlight refracting and reflecting in water droplets creating a spectrum of seven colors that appear as a circular arc, with no two people seeing the exact same one.

Rainbows, though, have inspired countless stories, myths and interpretations throughout history. Beyond their beauty, they carry rich spiritual meanings and are often seen as symbols of hope, transformation, diversity and divine connections. Rainbows are often seen as bridges between the physical and spiritual worlds. Some believe they are sent by loved ones who have passed on, offering comfort and reassurance of their presence. Rainbows have a very special and significant meaning to us.

Courtney’s Godmother, on January 4th, 2026, shared with us this beautiful rainbow (pictured) and said, “It’s Courtney’s Rainbow!!!! I was so hoping to see one today or tomorrow and here it is. I saw a rainbow on the same day after Courtney’s funeral and never forgot it. Strangely, I have spotted at least three or four right around this time and around her birthday, so I am always so thrilled. Truly a great sign.”

There was the biggest and brightest double rainbow we have ever seen after Courtney’s service on January 12th, 2008. We look at that rainbow as a sign sent by Courtney offering us comfort and reassurance of her presence.
We will be doing a post flood clean up, on Feb. 7th , at the Cloverdale River Park for Courtney’s 35th Birthday. Please stop by and say Hello.

She was an amazing woman who loved life and faced each day with joy. She turned 106 on Dec. 2nd. We used to ask her what her secret was to such a long life and she always said she just didn’t worry about things– she thought it was a waste of energy. She would get up each day and get dressed to go out “just in case someone called and wanted to go somewhere”. Wherever she went and whatever she was doing was always an adventure to be enjoyed. She will be so missed but we, her family and friends, are so lucky to have known and loved this one-of-a-kind very special lady. We love you Mom – thank you for giving us so many years of pure pleasure and loving care.

The family would like to thank all of you at the Cloverdale Senior Center for all your care and attention to Erma over the years. She always loved participating in your activities and made some wonderful friendships there. We have no doubt it was a contributing factor to her long life.

We are thankful for the guidance God provides to us every day. We are thankful for family, friends and our community. We are thankful for our home, health and all the necessities that keep us comfortable on this earth.

This Thanksgiving, we went to Fort Bragg and put a Memorial lock for Courtney on the Trestle Bridge at Pudding Creek. We gave Thanks for this sweet girl and for the time we had with her.

We will be planting a beautiful Rosebud tree in Courtney’s memory at the Cloverdale River Park on Jan.5, 2026. The Rosebud was donated by the wonderful folks at the Cloverdale Home & Garden – Ashley, Scott, Gary and Starlight. Hope to see you out there.

Evelyn Sue Dickens passed peacefully from this life on November 4th, 2025 no longer facing her day-to-day battle with MSD/Leukemia which she fought for over a year. Her beloved husband of 47 years George “Tex” Dickens was at her side until the very end. Sue was born in Kingsburg, California on October 13, 1947, to Grady and Woodie Wilson. The family, including her sister Annette Magoulas (1945-2023), Inez Tenter and Mervyn Wilson moved to Arcata, CA then to Cloverdale in 1961, where Sue lived until her passing.

A graduate of Cloverdale High School, Sue worked in the Lumber industry as a bookkeeper, and also for New World Mfg., an apprentice for Tex at Dickens Enterprises. Sue also had a Fabric store in Cloverdale in the 80’s. After she closed her shop, she started to work for the County of Sonoma as a filing clerk. She stayed with the County advancing with every opportunity. In 1999 Sue graduated from SRJC with a degree in Accountancy, this advanced her position with the Auditor Controllers office where Sue retired.

Sue played softball, as a catcher, and was also on various bowling teams. As a sports advocate, you would find her at most sporting events keeping score for basketball games, moving the chains for football or simply just watching the games with Tex. Later in her years she began to play golf; she even had the rare honor of hitting a hole-in-one!

Sue was a proud Lioness for the Cloverdale Lions Club. One of the founders of the Cloverdale Boosters Club, Sue also received the Boosters award in 2025. Tex and Sue were honored as Grand Marshalls of the Cloverdale Citrus Fair Parade in 1993 and in February of 2025. A participant and supporter for Relay for Life. Sue was a passionate baker, artist and seamstress. This was Sue’s “love language.”

Sue is survived by her husband Tex, her daughters, Denise (Young) Palmer and Andrea Young, stepmother to Renee (Kirk) Afman, Shelly (Kevin) Mack, Angela (Chris) Ovard. Grandmother to Nathan, Allison, Easton, Karla, Garrit, Jene’, Bethany, Courtney, Sarah, Theresa and Chandler.

Great Grandmother to Mia, Callie, Millie, Bodie, Bannon, August, Holland, Violet and Beckett.
A Celebration of life will be held on December 28th at the Cloverdale Citrus Fair. 2:00-5:00 PM. If you are attending, please wear blue as it is her favorite color.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Cloverdale Lions Club on Sue Dickens behalf.

A dedicated resident of Cloverdale, Alan Furber was a beloved father, grandfather, and a man who believed things simply “had to be done”, even if it meant climbing to the highest rung on an orchard ladder to clean a gutter or spending hours clearing brush.

For fifteen years, he taught woodshop at Brookhaven Junior High in Sebastopol, introducing countless students to the smell of sawdust and the pride of crafting a pig-shaped cutting board. His creativity spanned beyond the classroom; he was a self-taught lathe turner, a precise painter, who never used blue tape, and a marching band trombone player who kept his musty, worn instrument case handy.

His dedication to Cloverdale was deep-rooted. His great grandparents moved here in 1879. He and his brother Craig and parents Helen and Alan Sr developed family land for both housing and the Furber Ranch Plaza shopping center, and he consistently supported the town’s entrepreneurs, purposefully buying from local businesses. He also served on the board of the History Center, teaching visitors about the community’s past.

Alan was an avid outdoorsman, a fixture on local trails, hiking 3-4 miles several times a week. It was a routine everyone in town seemed to know. He loved fishing, hunting, and waterskiing. He made sure his kids and grandkids learned the thrill of popping out of the water, or holding on to the inner tube handles with all their might. He also shared his passion for the ocean, diving for abalone and treating the family to delicious appetizers.

He was the guy who always showed up—for soccer games, speech tournaments, and every performance or show his grandchildren, Hazel, Avy, and Zac, performed in. He taught his family everything from how to fix a clogged sink to how to drive a stick shift. He loved to dance, always with a big smile on his face, a joy that was reflected on his partner’s. A master of the grill, he could barbeque anything and his signature potluck item was tr-tip served on toothpicks, making him instantly popular. When he truly loved a meal, his highest praise was the simple and understated “pretty fair”.

His legacy is carried on by his beloved daughters Amy and Andrea and their husbands Jim and Casey and his cherished grandchildren, Zac, Avy, and Hazel. He loved us, and we loved him, and he will be fiercely missed by his family, friends, and the Cloverdale community he helped build.

We will celebrate his life on December 13, 2025, at The Citrus Fair Auditorium at 11:00am. Please join us for memories, food and fellowship. He’d want it that way.

In lieu of flowers, support local Cloverdale businesses, or donate to the Cloverdale History Center 215 N Cloverdale Blvd, or Shriners Children’s Northern California, Office of Philanthropy, 2425 Stockton Blvd. Sacramento, CA 95817
